Peter Lilley (Conservative MP for Hitchin & Harpenden) is now on the campaign trail and will be seen canvassing for all he's worth around his constituency.

For Hitchin residents he will be in the Bearton area and Walsworth area next week. (See below).

As we move closer to the election all candidates will be seen to ramp up activity over the next few weeks. A general hustings has been arranged for Wednesday the 21st of April at 7.30pm at Walsworth Road Baptist Church were constituents can see candidates answer pre-determined questions. (All questions were submitted in advance)

If you take a look at the three main parties local websites for their Hitchin & Harpenden candidates you will see that only the Conservative and Lib Dem's seem to have taken the time to update their site. Oli de Botton's site (Labour) does  appear that relevant to the forthcoming election as press articles and events appear to relate to the back end of last year.

Apart from the General Hustings Peter Lilley can also be found in Hitchin on Tuesday canvassing in the Bearton area of town around 6pm and on the 27th of April canvassing the Walsworth area at approximately the same time, 6pm. The Lib Dem candidate Nigel Quinton will be seen at the Hustings on Wednesday but does not appear to have a canvassing agenda publicised on his website as yet.

Local residents want to meet these candidates and hear for themselves what their policies and intentions are for the future of Hitchin. A hustings with pre-determined questions is a start but does it really give the constituents a real insight into their prospective MP's aims and ideas?. We want them on the street pressing flesh and talking without a script in front of them!

In the interests of fairness to all we have recieved an email from Mr Rob Lambie who has been out canvassing with the Lib Dem candidate Nigel Quinton recently and,in response to my article about 'Where to find your MP' he sent us a breakdown of Nigel Quinton's activity over the last couple of weeks:

'1. We ran a Saturday stall last week in the centre of Hitchin between 0830-1600. Nigel met local residents and then went canvassing in Bearton ward. This was the third stall we have run in the previous 5 months. The Tory's haven't done anything like this.

    2. Nigel was canvassing in Bearton yesterday (Satruday 17th) and was then at Hitchin Town FC.

    3. Over the past week Nigel has been canvassing in Highbury ward.

    4. This week Nigel will continue to canvass in and around Hitchin. At the front door we are getting an amazing response, both because of the National situation and because we have strong local candidates standing in the District Council elections.'

Thanks for the response Rob. Feel free to register with us and keep us up to date with Nigels agenda during the run up to voting day.
