Business Power in Hitchin

The power of the small independent business was in plain view in Hitchin on Wednesday when I was set the task of finding some silver baubles/balls for my daughters Art Photography project.

Knowing Hitchin as well as I do I went to all the obvious shops that sell unusual or alternative items such as Stripe in the Churchyard. On each occassion I had a quick look around each shop myself and then sought assistance from the shop assistant/owner.

Now even though it took me two days to finally find what I was looking for all the shops that I visited had one thing in common; they were all happy to recommend other shops/businesses in Hitchin that may  be able to supply what I was looking for.

Now, if you attempted the same excercise in any of the neighbouring towns it would be a totally different experience. Not only did the shops in Hitchin recommend other shops but each and every person I came into contact with took the time to consider alternative ways to produce a silver sphere i.e a tennis ball wrapped in foil or sprayed silver. One shop owner/assistant even took the time to undertake a google search for alternative options - (Phillpotts in Sun Street).

Thanks to all of those businesses that took the time to help me it was a refreshing change to visit shops that actually understands the concept of customer service. All of you did your town proud and it sets Hitchin apart from all of its neighbours. A lunch hour well spent I think!
