A Level results improve year on year - But why?

With all of the schools and colleges local to Hitchin reporting improved A Level and GCSE results this year, are the parents of Hitchin and surrounds concerned about the school their child is due to attend this September?
With competition being fierce for places at the best schools regardless of where you live in the country, is Hitchin a little pocket of exception with so many schools performing so well?
It is safe to say that the best schools do attract the better teachers, but surely there must be more to it than good teachers. Do the schools in Hitchin have better resources and facilities to offer compared to neighbouring towns? Are they dealing with higher achievers and do they 'cherry pick' their students to maintain their academic results?
As Hitchin expands with new developments in every available green space will these results be maintained, or will the schools of Hitchin have to provide educational facilities for all abilities as the population expands?
