Big plans - small post office!

With all this talk of development and changing the look and feel of Hitchin's Churchgate area, has anyone considered the impact it may have on the local post office?

As every local knows the present Post Office is sharing space courtesy of Martins on Market Square and is already extremely busy, especially at lunch times.

If everything we hear is to be believed then a new shopping centre / mall will attract more visitors to Hitchin and therefore more pressure on essential services. The Post Office, as it functions now, will not be able to cope with an influx of outside visitors.

Now if you want your hair cut or nails done then you are spoilt for choice but if you need to send a parcel, renew your tax disc or buy some stamps then be prepared to queue!

It appears that no thought has been given to the small existing businesses, which includes the Post Office, that cope adequately at present but with the pressure of more shops that can offer a wider choice at a cheaper price and a higher footfall for those already pushed to their limit, it may just tip many small shops over the edge in Hitchin.
