Mobile phone masts - friend or foe?

With the march for progress being as avaricious as ever the need for mobile phone masts has become more and more important as people become accustomed to being able to use their mobile irrespective of their location.
So, in order to try and be sympathetic to their surroundings phone masts are now being camouflaged. This does appear to make them less of an eyesore. But, do they damage the environment? In the past there has been much speculation about the effects that electricity pylons have on people that live in close proximity but are mobile phone masts the same?
Will we find out in 20 or 30 years time that they emit dangerous levels of pollutants? Or, like the phone mast just outside of Hitchin behind Harkness Roses and Amber Leisure will camouflaging them make people dismiss their risks in order to continue keeping apace of modern society and its need for instant gratification and service.
