Who needs ASDA? I would like to think that in Hitchin we have a slightly more discerning public, who don't want or need the sort of cheap and nasty produce supplied by this company, we are a small market town and have some unique shops and businesses which attract custom from outside the area, this custom could be driven out by the likes ASDA and other big companies which in turn would take away the reason for people to visit Hitchin, and the spiral would continue.
Bigger towns like Stevenage & Luton are purpose made to incorporate a wide choice mega stores with ample parking and are only a short drive away, if you need these big stores go there.
Hitchin is a small town with a lot to offer outsiders, lets keep it that way.
Does that sound a bit snobbish? GOOD, lets keep Hitchin a cut above the rest.
Regards,
Paul Furniss.

I see your point but Hitchin already has a Sainsburys and a Waitrose - I wouldn't have said Sainsburys food is any better (or worse) than Asda's stock.
What about the people (without transport) who are on a budget - surely Asda will be a good thing for them.
Can you honestly say you get all your food shopping from small independent shops? Also, I would say Asda is a step up from Netto?
I think it is a good thing - I've never shopped in that Netto, but could well see myself popping into the new Asda for bits and bobs.

I'd agree with Hitchin_Bod - Netto was as low as it gets, so ASDA is a step up. It's nice that Paul can afford to pay as high prices as he or she wants without any thought for those on lower incomes. I'd rather decent people who shop in ASDA around the town than people like Paul who 'thinks' he's better than everyone else.
ASDA are also great for kids clothes, which Hitchin currently does not offer.
