Detectives have 'exhausted all lines of inquiry' and are now launching a public appeal one month after an assault in Hitchin.

The incident happened on Market Place, Hitchin, shortly after 2am on New Year's Day when a man was walking along the square by Starbucks Coffee before two males jumped out of a black Smart car and approached him.

An argument broke out and a passer–by tried to intervene.

The man, who was initially approached, was punched in the face and the passer-by was also hit to the face and fell to the ground, colliding with a drainpipe as he fell. During the incident a female was also assaulted.

The man who assaulted both men, then got back into the black Smart car and made off away from Hitchin.

PC Gary Larkman, investigating the incident, said: "This was a totally unprovoked and nasty attack which has left two male's with nasty facial injuries and also led to a female being assaulted.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have information on this incident to get in touch, especially in relation to a black Smart car. It is over a month since this incident happened and we have exhausted all lines of enquiry."

"Were you in the Market Place Hitchin in the early hours of New Year's Eve? Did you notice anything suspicious?"

Anyone with information can contact PC Larkman on 101 quoting crime reference numbers: G1/13/6 G1/13/7.
