Heavy snowfall in Hitchin is expected to continue through the night

The freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in Hitchin are set to continue through the night.

Tonight (4th February) snowfall in Hitchin is making for difficult driving conditions. Motorists are being urged by police to take extra precautions and to only travel if absolutely necessary.

Supt Dave Boyle said: "I'd encourage all residents to think about whether they really need to make journeys.

"If your journey is essential then please ensure you take as many precautions as possible to stay safe."

Simple safety tips include having the correct level of anti-freeze in the vehicle and warm clothes, food, water, an ice scraper and fully charged mobile phone, he added.

People should plan their journeys and allow extra time, let someone know their route, keep their speed down and stick to roads that have been gritted.
